HPD Inpatient Stay and Outpatient Visits Report

Published by Department of Health Care Access and Information | State of California | Catalog Last Checked: July 31, 2026 at 08:43 PM | Dataset Last Updated: June 09, 2026 at 08:17 PM
The dataset contains data for the Healthcare Payments Data (HPD) Inpatient Stay and Outpatient Visits Report. The term "Visits" refers to individual health events where a person receives medical care, categorized using Onpoint Health Data’s Service-Focused Episode (SFE) Grouper logic. Onpoint’s methodology groups visits under inpatient, outpatient diagnostic, outpatient surgical and professional service categories. The data in the report includes three main metrics: The total visit count for each visit type, the visit rate per 1,000 insured members in California for each visit type, and the median out-of-pocket cost amount (OOP) that is experienced for people in that visit type. The visit rate per 1,000 members is calculated by dividing the total number of visits during the reporting year by the total sum of monthly member enrollments and multiplying by 12,000. The metrics can be grouped by reporting year, county of residence and LA Service Planning Area (SPA) and payer type. The coding specifications behind Onpoint Health Data’s SFE Grouper logic is available in the technical notes documentation, available along with the dataset.
