Hawaiian Islands, Hawaiian hoary bat guano representative DNA sequences to arthropod family level, 2010 to 2021
Fecal (guano) samples were collected from 137 adult Hawaiian hoary bats (‘ōpe‘ape‘a; Lasiurus semotus) from 27 locations across the Islands of Hawai‘i, Maui, O‘ahu, and Kaua‘i, between the years 2010 and 2021. A total of 141 guano samples were taken from live bats captured (and recaptured) with mist netting techniques (n=123), collected from roosting bats while under observation (n=12), and salvaged from bat carcasses (n=6). As part of the 141 samples, we incorporated comparable raw guano sequence data generated from 11 bats captured during ecological research conducted on Maui by H.T. Harvey & Associates. Total guano samples obtained by island prior to sequencing efforts and statistical modeling were as follows: Island of Hawai‘i (n = 113), Maui (n = 21), O‘ahu (n = 2) and Kaua‘i (n = 5).This data file lists the 398 unique amplicon sequences (ASVs) we genetically identified in bat guano samples, derived with the Zeale primer set.
