Great Smoky Mountains National Park Fisheries Monitoring Database

Published by National Park Service | Department of the Interior | Catalog Last Checked: March 04, 2026 at 06:49 AM | Dataset Last Updated: October 29, 2018 at 12:00 AM
These data represent fish census surveys in Great Smoky Mountains National Park conducted using the Delury Method of Three-Pass Depletion electrofishing. In 2018, fish were collected, sorted by species, and weighed at 58 unique sites (one survey location, Conard Branch, was fishless) from a total of 29 streams ranging in size from first to third-order waterways. These streams are surveyed on an annual basis to monitor population trends over time. All sample methodology adhered to the 1992 ‘Standardized Sampling Guidelines for Wadeable Trout Streams’ set forth by the American Fisheries Society Southern Division, Trout Committee. Two of the streams, Anthony Creek and Little Cataloochee Creek, have been the sites of ongoing native Brook Trout restoration projects. Both streams are expected to return to pre-restoration fish densities within 3-4 years.
