| description | These GIS files were developed from procedures described in (https://irma.nps.gov/App/Reference/Profile/2188654) where two primary tasks are accomplished: (1) aerial imagery is classified into two dominant classifications, natural and non-natural, within the park and within a 1-km buffer (outer boundary) of the park, and prepared for subsequent analysis that is performed in the FRAGSTATS landscape analysis application, and (2) a base-square grid is developed where several distance- and surface-analyses are conducted for each grid cell and included as attributes for post-processing user-defined queries. As referred to in Task 1, part of the analysis procedure involves the classification and delineation of natural and non-natural areas. Operational definitions of natural and non-natural areas are SECN-specific, where natural areas are defined as open/vegetated areas and areas dominated by trees/shrubs, and non-natural areas, also referred to as urban areas, are defined as roads/parking lots, bare areas of dirt, and structures. In instances where parks are long and linear, composed of discontinuous units, have meaningful unofficial boundaries (e.g., geographic) between areas where adjacent-land impacts or other effects are known/hypothesized to differ, or contain other characteristics that we hypothesize to have a relationship to some or several variables addressed in this procedure, an option exists in this procedure to define these “subunits” and prepare these subunits separately for analysis by FRAGSTATS. The output base-grid shapefile referred to in Task 2 may be easily adapted for use as the extent and probability raster in the RRQRR Tool (Theobald et al. 2006, 2007) and used as a foundation upon which to draw spatially-balanced sampling locations. |
