Geophysical, zircon U-Pb data, and lithologic log for borehole CFPP-B01, eastern Snake River Plain, Idaho
In 2020, Cascade Drilling contracted by Rizzo International, Inc drilled and constructed corehole CFPP-B01 (USGS Site 433814113031801) for stratigraphic framework analysis. The corehole is located along the western boundary of Idaho National Laboratory (INL) just south of State Highway 33 in southeastern Idaho. Corehole CFPP-B01 was continuously cored from approximately 4 to 1538 feet (ft) below land surface (BLS) between September 16th, 2020 and October 23rd, 2020. After coring was complete, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) collected geophysical data, uranium-leab (U-Pb) zircon age data from two separate rhyolite intervals, and prepared detailed core descriptions.
The USGS Idaho National Laboratory Project Office (INLPO) measured a water level of 546 feet BLS and collected geophysical logs using Century™ multi-parameter logging probes on November 3rd, 2020. Geophysical data include natural gamma, neutron, and temperature (9057A), gamma-gamma density (0024C), and gyroscopic deviation (9095C) logs. These data were examined synergistically with available core material to identify contacts between basalt flows and location and thickness of sediment layers.
These logs are displayed in file CFPP-B01_Geophysical_Log.pdf. The gyroscopic deviation survey displays the project well bore path in plan view in file CFPP-B01_PlanView_GyroLog.pdf. Geophysical log data can also be obtained by downloading attached LAS files or by visiting USGS-GeoLog Locator.
The core from CFPP-B01 is archived at the USGS Lithologic Core Storage Library located at the Central Facilities Area of INL. CFPP-B01 drill core was photographed and described using the standardized methods of Johnson and others (2005). These standardized methods make use of commercially available software that include using a procedure developed by the USGS INLPO. The standardized method maximizes description and minimizes interpretation of the core. Lithologic description of the drill core identified two rhyolite horizons: an upper horizon from 1139.7 to 1384.7 ft BLS and a lower horizon from 1512 to 1538.2 ft BLS. U-Pb data from each horizon was acquired via laser ablation-inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICPMS) and isotope dilution-thermal ionization mass spectrometry (ID-TIMS) from the Boise State University Isotope Geology Laboratory to obtain rare earth element geochemistry and U-Pb isotope ratios to calculate the eruption age of both horizons.
