Geomorphic Reference Reach Data for the Kalamazoo River Basin, Michigan Area of Concern: Kalamazoo River Between Trowbridge Dam and Allegan, Michigan, 2023

Metadata Updated: November 12, 2025

The datasets contained in this data release represent the results of a geomorphic assessment of the Kalamazoo River to identify and characterize reference reaches that are applicable analogues for dam removal and restoration sites in various channel and valley settings along the Kalamazoo River from the city of Kalamazoo downstream through the towns of Plainwell and Allegan. Data are included from four reference reaches in a 15 km section between Trowbridge Dam and Allegan, MI that were identified based on variations in valley confinement, channel planform, hydraulic geometry, and gradient. Reference Reach 1 (furthest upstream) had a single-thread planform, partial valley confinement, an average gradient of 0.079% and average bankfull width of 83.4 m. Reference Reach 2 was in a section of multi-thread channel planform, was laterally unconfined, and had an average gradient of 0.049% and bankfull width of 64.0 m. Reference Reach 3 had single-thread planform, was laterally unconfined, and had an average gradient of 0.059% and bankfull width of 66.2 m. Reference Reach 4 had single-thread planform, was laterally confined within a narrow valley, and had an average gradient of 0.014% and bankfull width of 64.6 m. The reference reach data include channel cross-sections, valley-spanning cross-sections, a longitudinal profile, mapped hydrogeomorphic units, and substrate size data. Each of these data types are contained in separate child items accessible from the main ScienceBase landing page. Data from all four reaches are included in each child item. These geomorphic data are delivered in a variety of file formats, organized in a nested structure. Details on the overall structure and organization of the files in the data release are contained in a README file. Additional details on methods, accuracy and potential uses of the datasets are contained within the metadata files associated with each particular dataset.
