Geologic Map Schema (GeMS) version of the State Geologic Map Compilation (SGMC) Geodatabase of the Conterminous United States

This data release provides a Geologic Map Schema (GeMS, USGS NCGMP, 2020) version of the State Geologic Map Compilation (SGMC) geodatabase of the conterminous United States (Horton and others, 2017). The SGMC provides spatial data for 48 state geologic maps that range from 1:50,000 to 1:1,000,000 scale. The GeMS version of the SGMC provides updated data for Arkansas, Mississippi, Missouri, New Mexico, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, and New York, as well as corrections to the original SGMC. Geologic units remain unreconciled across state boundaries, and for states that have bedrock and surficial geologic maps, only the bedrock map is represented in this dataset. SGMC tables and (or) attribute fields that did not conform to the GeMS standard, such as standardized lithology, age, and stratigraphy information, are retained as non-required GeMS elements. The GeMS conversion of the SGMC predates development of the USGS Cooperative National Geologic Map (CNGM), which also provides GeMS versions of state geologic maps. Because these efforts occurred at different times by different programs, variations between the GeMS versions of the SGMC and the CNGM may exist.
