Geochemical data for sedimentary rocks and bentonites from the U.S. Cretaceous Western Interior Seaway

Published by U.S. Geological Survey | Department of the Interior | Catalog Last Checked: August 01, 2026 at 04:07 AM | Dataset Last Updated: July 09, 2026 at 12:00 AM
Geochemical data were generated and compiled for sedimentary rocks and bentonites deposited in the Cretaceous Western Interior Seaway from 15 drill cores and 1 outcrop spanning present-day Texas to Alaska. These data were collected to better understand Cretaceous source rocks and petroleum systems of the United States. These data accompany a manuscript that will be submitted to a journal for publication that focuses on evaluating the silicon and zirconium proxy for geochemically identifying biogenic silica. These data include lithofacies assignments, total carbon, total organic carbon, programmed temperature pyrolysis, and whole rock elemental chemistry.
