Genesee River Lake Sturgeon (Acipenser fulvescens) Capture Data (2016-2025)
Since 2003, an ongoing research project has been conducted in the Genesee River, New York regarding lake sturgeon reintroduction techniques. This project's applied technique involved the release of age-0 hatchery reared juveniles into historic tributary habitat. One goal of this long-term reintroduction project was to document the return of adult lake sturgeon for spawning after more than eighty years of absence.
This dataset contains adult lake sturgeon detections resulting from ten years (May 2016-2025) of sampling in the Genesee River. Each spring, the fish-accessible section of the river was fished overnight with large mesh gill nets (selective for adult lake sturgeon) in adult habitat consistent locations. Included in this dataset are details on capture date, netting, location, floy tag, PIT tag, acoustic tag, length, weight, girth, year class, and life stage (life stage being determined by an examination of size, morphology, and presence of gametes). In the decade of sampling, a total of ninety-two fish classified as adults and sixteen fish classified as sub-adults were captured. Thirty-six of the captured adults (2022, 2023, and 2025) were surgically implanted with Innovasea V16T acoustic tags (10-year battery life). All fish were immediately released back into the water following measurements and tagging to return to their normal fish behavior.
