This dataset contains notifications of fisheries closure areas in U.S. federal jurisdictions in the Gulf of Mexico as precautionary measures in response to the Deepwater Horizon oil spill. These notifications date from from May 2, 2010 to April 19, 2011. The NOAA National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) issued these emergency rules to close portions of the Gulf of Mexico, South Atlantic, and Caribbean exclusive economic zones (Southeast EEZ) to all fishing as necessary to respond to the evolving nature of the Deepwater Horizon oil spill. Fish and shellfish in oil affected waters may be contaminated with levels of hydrocarbons above baseline levels. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) considers such seafood to be adulterated. The intent of these emergency rules is to prohibit the harvest of adulterated seafood and for public safety.
