    Ethics Commission Advice Letters

    A. SUMMARY This dataset contains historical records of formal advice issued by the Ethics Commission.

    The San Francisco Charter gives the Ethics Commission the authority to provide written formal opinions. Written formal opinions are available to individuals who request advice about their responsibilities under local law. Formal opinions provide the requester immunity from subsequent enforcement action if the material facts are as stated in the request for advice, and if the District Attorney and City Attorney concur in the advice. Formal opinions prepared by staff must be approved by the full Commission.

    B. HOW THE DATASET IS CREATED This dataset is created from a data import of formal advice issued by the Ethics Commission.

    C. UPDATE PROCESS This dataset will not be regularly updated because it contains historical records.

    D. HOW TO USE THIS DATASET Advice records may be filtered by section of law or category of law. The same advice letter may be listed more than once if it's related to multiple code sections of law.

    Use the filter on the "Section" column to find advice by code section. Use the search bar to find advice by relevant search terms.

    Click on "View Advice" to access the full advice letter on the commission's website.
