Energy Geochemistry Database (ver. 2.0, September 2026)
The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Energy Geochemistry Database (EGDB) is a collection of 3,619,149 analytical results from 111,791 samples collected by the Energy Resources Program (ERP) to develop an understanding of the physical and geochemical processes responsible for hydrocarbon formation. The geochemical data are also used in assessments of oil and gas potential for sedimentary basins in both national and international settings (USGS Geochemistry Database, 2024). The EGDB is a compilation of organic and inorganic analytical data from the ERP Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS), historic databases, and data compiled from literature and unpublished public domain sources.
The EGDB is a relational database comprised of a “Samples” table, “Analysis” table, “OrdersComments” table and several data dictionary tables. The “Samples” table contains information pertaining to the location where the samples were collected and geologic information about the samples. The “Analysis” table contains records of analysis results from the analyses performed on the samples. The “OrdersComments” table contains additional information about the samples for each order ID. The data dictionary tables are named accordingly, followed by type of data in each table. Several predefined queries are included to assist with extracting data. The queries can be modified to fit user defined criteria.
