Energy Geochemistry Database

Published by U.S. Geological Survey | Department of the Interior | Catalog Last Checked: May 05, 2026 at 07:29 PM | Dataset Last Updated: December 08, 2025 at 12:00 AM
The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) has compiled the Energy Geochemistry Database (EGDB), containing 3,619,149 analytical results for 111,791 samples collected by the Energy Resources Program (ERP) to develop an understanding of the physical and geochemical processes responsible for hydrocarbon formation. It also serves as a tool to assess oil and gas potential for sedimentary basins in both national and international settings (USGS Geochemistry Database, 2024). The EGDB is a compilation of inorganic and organic analytical data currently being captured in the ERP Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS), historic databases, and data compiled from literature and unpublished public domain sources. The EGDB is a relational database comprised of a Samples table and an Analysis table. The Samples table contains information pertaining to the location where the samples were collected and geologic information about the samples. The Analysis table contains records of analysis results from the analyses performed on the samples. Several predefined queries are included to assist with extracting data. The queries can be modified to fit user defined criteria.
