Describes emergency department (ED) visits involving the nonmedical use of narcotic pain relievers (opioids) using data from the Drug Abuse Warning Network (DAWN). The drugs most commonly combined with narcotic pain relievers in ED visits; trends for narcotic pain relievers (2005-2011); demographic characteristics of narcotic pain reliever-related visits in 2011; comparison of age groups, and trends for specific narcotic pain relievers by age group are analyzed.
