Ecosystem carbon stocks and fluxes on 62 Department of Defense installations within the contiguous United States from 2001-2021.
This data set contains tabular simulation model output from the Land Use and Carbon Simulator (LUCAS) summarizing annual changes in land use and land cover (LULC), ecosystem carbon stocks and ecosystem carbon fluxes within 62 U.S. Department of Defense (DOD) installations covering a total land area of approximately one million hectares across the contiguous United States (CONUS) from 2001 to 2021. Installations were selected by partner scientists at the U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center to broadly represent those operated by four of the U.S. Armed Forces branches (Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps) across the geographic extent of the CONUS. The LUCAS model was parameterized with historical spatial datasets derived from remote sensing to characterize changes in LULC over time, and with spatially interpolated annual climate data to simulate inter-annual variation in rates of vegetation productivity and organic matter decomposition. A unique LUCAS model was produced for each of the 62 DOD installations, with each model run on an annual timestep at 30-m spatial resolution with 40 Monte Carlo realizations. This data set contains four unique tabular data summaries:
1. LULC: Land area within each LULC category summarized by DOD installation and timestep.
2. Transitions: Land area that experienced a change in LULC category, summarized by transition type, DOD installation, and timestep.
3. Carbon Stocks: Mass of organic carbon in each carbon stock group, summarized by DOD installation and timestep.
4. Carbon Fluxes: Mass of carbon transferred between individual carbon stocks, summarized by DOD installation and timestep.
The geographic coverage and extent of these installations are marked by DOD as Controlled Unclassified Information (CUI), which prevents public dissemination of their spatial boundaries and geographic coordinates.
