Drilling, construction, geophysical data, and lithologic log for borehole USGS 147, eastern Snake River Plain, Idaho
In 2018, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), in cooperation with the U.S. Department of Energy, drilled and constructed borehole USGS 147 (USGS Site 432851113001401) near the southern boundary of Idaho National Laboratory (INL) for hydrogeologic data collection and stratigraphic framework analyses. The borehole was continuously cored from approximately 14 to 751 feet below land surface (BLS). Two years later, USGS 147 was deepened and cored continuously from 751 to a total depth of 1048 feet BLS. From this borehole, the USGS collected geophysical data, daily drilling notes, and prepared detailed core descriptions up to the borehole’s final drilling depth of 1048 BLS, which are included as part of this data release.
The USGS INL Project Office collected multiple geophysical logs on June 6, 2020 using Century multi-parameter logging probes. Geophysical data include gamma-gamma density (tool 0024C), natural gamma (tool 9057A), neutron (tool 9057A), and gyroscopic deviation logs (tool 9095C), which were examined synergistically with available core material to identify contacts between basalt flows and the location and thickness of sediment layers. File USGS_147_Geophysical_Logs.pdf synergistically displays gamma-gamma density, natural gamma, and neutron data from at or near the land surface to total depth. File USGS_147_PlanView_Gyro.pdf displays the projected well bore path in plan view based on the gyroscopic deviation log. All geophysical log data can be obtained by downloading the attached LAS files or by visiting the USGS-GeoLog Locator.
The core from USGS 147 is stored and archived at the USGS Lithologic Core Storage Library located at the Central Facilities Area of INL. The core was photographed and described using the standardized methods of johnson and others (2005) and Dietz (2026), which maximizes descriptions and minimizes interpretations. The photographs and descriptions are displayed in USGS_147_Lithologic_Log.pdf, which uses a commercially-available software to display the lithologic log following a procedure developed by the USGS INL Project Office.
