Directional wave measurements, sea surface temperatures, and additional ocean surface parameters recorded by the Scripps Institution of Oceanography's Coastal Data Information Program network of Datawell Waverider buoys since September 1991

Published by NOAA National Centers for Environmental Information | National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, Department of Commerce | Catalog Last Checked: May 06, 2026 at 06:50 AM | Dataset Last Updated: January 24, 2026 at 12:00 AM
The foundation of this ongoing collection are high-resolution directional wave spectra and parameters measured by Datawell Waverider buoys deployed across US waters. Supplementing the spectral wave data are measurements of sea surface displacement, sea surface temperature, air temperature, and surface current speed and direction. The data are collected in real-time and transmitted to the Coastal Data Information Program (CDIP) at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography (SIO), La Jolla, CA, where they are processed and submitted to quality control procedures. CDIP, founded in 1975, maintains wave gauges in US waters worldwide, with primary funding from The US Army Corps of Engineers, and in extensive partnership with NOAA Integrated Ocean Observing System (IOOS) Regional Associations and other governmental, university, and private entities.
