Digital drill core logs, Stillwater Complex, Montana (ver. 2.0, March 2026)
This dataset includes graphic drill logs for drill core from the Stillwater Complex, Montana that was drilled from the 1960's to the 2000's. Each zip file contains the data for a specific geographic region or geologic target within the Stillwater Complex:
The "SWTR_CM_drill_logs.zip" file contains data for the Contact Mountain area.
The "SWTR_JM_Reef_drill_logs.zip" file contains data for drill holes drilled for the purpose of exploration of the J-M Reef.
The "SWTR_PP_drill_logs.zip" file contains data for the Picket Pin area.
The "SWTR_CC_drill_logs.zip" file contains data for the Crescent Creek area.
The zip files contain TIFF (Tagged Image File Format) images of graphic drill core logs showing associated drill core information, a TIFF image of the explanation for the lithology and structure sections of the logs, Esri shapefiles of the locations of the drill hole collars, and .csv files of tabular data that were compiled from handwritten drill core logs, thin section observations, and drill core sample observations.
The data shown in the graphic drill logs and contained within the .csv files includes lithologic, structure, percent recovery, grain size, sulfide, chromite, nickel, copper, cobalt, sulfur, chromium, platinum, palladium, gold, and silver mineralization information.
The graphic drill logs were created using Golden software's Strater 5 drill core visualization software and are provided with both logarithmic and linear scales where applicable. The graphic drill logs are plotted using the depth recorded in the drill logs and do not reflect stratigraphic true thickness.
All instances of question marks ("?") represent original data as written by the geologist who logged the core. In areas where the hand-written notes were unreadable, the notation of "[unreadable]" was used.
The TIFF image files have Section 508 compliant metadata as per USGS section 508 compliancy officer guidelines. The image metadata can be viewed using software such as Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Bridge, or Windows file explorer.
