Digital database of previously published subsurface unit tops from the three-dimensional geologic model used for the 2003 National Oil and Gas Assessment of the San Joaquin Basin Province, California
This data release provides digital geospatial data related to the three-dimensional
geologic model (Hosford Scheirer, 2013) that was used as a framework for conducting the 2003 oil and gas assessment
of the San Joaquin Basin province, California (Gautier and others, 2004; Hosford Scheirer, ed., 2007).
The data release includes raster GeoTIFF files of the tops of the 15 composite geologic units created for
the three-dimensional geologic model of Hosford Scheirer (2013), as well as the thicknesses of
the modeled units. Model units are referred to as composite units because they incorporate various
stratigraphic units that exhibit facies variations, structural complexities, and inconsistent nomenclature;
they also force the top of each model unit within the three-dimensional model to be a single age.
The data release also includes a CSV
file and an ESRI shapefile (SHP) of well picks that were used in conjunction with other data to generate
the three-dimensional geologic model in EarthVision (Dynamic Graphics, Inc.). Two Microsoft Excel (XLSX) files
describe the contents of the raster files and the well files, presenting this information
in a more human-readable format than is presented in this XML metadata file. In addition,
the data release provides ESRI shapefiles of the San Joaquin Basin province
outline and of a boundary between areas of surface geology correspondence and unresolved complexity, as described
in Hosford Scheirer (2013). Unlike in the illustrations of Hosford Scheirer (2013), the surface and thickness grids
have been truncated to the west of this unresolved complexity boundary. While the geologic model
was sufficiently detailed for oil and gas assessment purposes, the model
is not sufficiently detailed for mapping purposes in the area of unresolved complexity.
For the files containing well information, values of NULL (CSV) and NaN (SHP) in any field indicate an
absence of information. Data sources of formation-top depths in wells are (1) California Department of
Conservation, Division of Oil, Gas, and Geothermal Resources Annual Reports (2007); (2) published
cross sections of the Pacific Section of the American Association of Petroleum Geologists
(PS-AAPG, 1957a, b, 1958a, b, 1959, 1989); (3) Imperato (1995); (4) Johnson and others (2005); and (5) Reid (1988).
Users interested in the gridded surfaces of this data release may also access Appendix 7.1 in Hosford
Scheirer (2013). Appendix 7.1 (https://pubs.usgs.gov/pp/pp1713/07/pp1713_ch07_appendices/pp1713_ch07_appendix7.1_EarthVision_model.zip)
contains the three-dimensional geologic model of the
San Joaquin Basin that can be visualized with embedded EarthVision (Dynamic Graphics, Inc.)
viewing software. The composite unit surfaces in the EarthVision model are matched as well as
possible in this data release using open, geospatial raster data formats.
