Diatoms in lake sediments from western Great Lake parks

Published by National Park Service | Department of the Interior | Catalog Last Checked: March 04, 2026 at 06:51 AM | Dataset Last Updated: January 01, 2021 at 12:00 AM
These datasets contain counts of diatom taxa in various long cores and surface samples from lake bottom sediments. Samples were collected as part of water quality monitoring activities by the National Park Service Great Lakes Inventory and Monitoring Network. Core samples were collected at 19 lakes in five national parks. Samples from various depths within the sediment cores were removed for analysis. Each sample was radiometrically dated using the lead 210 method. Samples were also examined to identify and determine a count tally for each diatom taxon. By associating a taxa assemblage with a sediment date, some inferences can be made about the water chemistry and quality at the time of sediment formation. Additionally, samples were collected from the lake bottom surface and similarly tallied to identify diatom taxa recently found within the lake waters
