    • Deepwater Snapper-Grouper Marine Protected Area Survey (1982 - 1983)

    The Southeast Fisheries Science Center Mississippi Laboratories conducts standardized fisheries independent resource surveys in the Gulf of Mexico, South Atlantic, and U.S. Caribbean to provide abundance and distribution information to support regional and international stock assessments. In 1982 to 1983, surveys were conducted to locate one or more Marine Protected Areas along the west Florida shelf to protect spawning aggregations of gag grouper.

    Lineage Specimens were collected using fish traps. Fish were identified, weighed and measured to determine length. Data were recorded on data sheets and entered into a database at the end of the survey. At the end of each survey data are reviewed for accuracy/relevance by the field party chief. Specimens that were not identified at sea were returned to the laboratory to determine the correct species.
