Cosco_Busan_DIVER_Case_Metadata

Metadata Updated: March 16, 2024

The Cosco Busan container ship struck a San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge tower in 2007, spilling 53,000 gallons of fuel oil. The oil spread to other parts of the Bay and outer coast, injuring expanses of rocky shorelines, mudflats, beaches, birds, fish, and popular recreational sites. The Trustees assessed injuries from the spill, reached a $30 million damages settlement with the ship’s owner and operator in 2011, and completed a restoration plan in 2012. NOAA and the trustees are implementing dozens of restoration projects around the Bay area to improve aquatic and shoreline habitats and enhance public recreation. DIVER environmental data holdings for the Cosco Busan case are primarily comprised of datasets gathered from regional studies, site specific studies from non-NOAA entities, and NOAA collected data. The datasets contained within the DIVER warehouse may originate from data producers other than NOAA. NOAA does not warrant the completeness or accuracy of provisional datasets, which may be subject to revision based on validation or QA/QC.
