Chloride concentration data for the western part of the Southern Hills regional aquifer system, Louisiana, 2021-22, and selected historical data

Metadata Updated: September 8, 2024

Groundwater is heavily used for public supply and industrial uses in the Baton Rouge area. Lowered water levels resulting from groundwater withdrawals have induced the movement of saltwater towards wells in East Baton Rouge and West Baton Rouge Parishes. Saltwater intrusion has the potential to affect water supply infrastructure, reduce water availability for certain uses, and increase treatment costs. To document current conditions, samples were collected at 161 wells screened in 10 aquifers of the Southern Hills regional aquifer system during November 2021 through February 2022. This dataset includes the results of this sampling effort and information on the sampled wells. Additionally, a table of historical chloride concentration data collected by the U.S. Geological Survey and the Louisiana Department of Health is provided for a selection of wells. This selection of wells is not an exhaustive dataset of all wells with available water quality data from these two sources, and only includes data that are referenced or displayed in the text or figures of the accompanying report. A table of user self-reported site-specific groundwater withdrawals compiled by the Capital Area Groundwater Conservation Commission for the study area for the year 2021 is also provided.
