Capture mark recapture data from giant gartersnakes (Thamnophis gigas) trapping in the Central Valley of California from 2011 to 2024
This data release includes several types of data collected during capture mark recapture studies in rice irrigation canals, fresh water marshes and tidal sloughs throughout the Central Valley of California from 2011 through 2024. Trapline characteristic data includes information about the traplines giant gartersnakes were captured at including daily weather and wind conditions, temperatures, trapping effort and other relevant trapline changes. The capture sighting and morphology forms include data about giant gartersnake captures and morphological measurements and body condition for individual snakes. The trap content data describes the non-snake contents captured in every 5th trap on the trapline for that day including fish, frogs, insects and other taxa. While the trap habitat data describes the habitat and vegetation composition around some of the traps on the trapline. These data are used in a variety of analyses that aid in giant gartersnake population monitoring and aim to support giant gartersnake conservation and recovery.
