Building Restriction Lines

Published by Department of Buildings | District of Columbia | Catalog Last Checked: June 02, 2026 at 05:47 PM | Dataset Last Updated: May 15, 2026 at 12:00 AM
Lines beyond which exterior walls of buildings may not project, generally managed and recorded by the DC Department of Buildings (DOB) and the Office of the Surveyor. Land between a property line and a Building Restriction Line is considered private property set aside for public space, and its use is governed by police regulations and overseen by the DOB. Awnings, cornices, and roof overhangs—may be permitted, subject to regulations in the Public Realm Design Manual. Removal or adjustment of a building restriction line can be requested through the Surveyor's office.
