Annual Bioclimatic Variables (BIO1-BIO19) derived from CMIP6-LOCA2 (1950-2100) for the Contiguous United States

Published by U.S. Geological Survey | Department of the Interior | Catalog Last Checked: August 01, 2026 at 05:01 AM | Dataset Last Updated: January 07, 2026 at 12:00 AM
This data release provides annual values for the 19 standard bioclimatic variables (BIO1–BIO19) for the Contiguous United States, computed from the downscaled CMIP6-LOCA2 temperature and precipitation dataset for 1950–2100. Daily maximum temperature, minimum temperature, and precipitation from 27 CMIP6-LOCA2 GCMs were processed using the Python xclim library to generate bioclimatic metrics for historical period (1950-2014) and three future emission scenarios (ssp245, ssp370, ssp585). The dataset includes 6-km gridded outputs on the native LOCA2 grid (944 × 474, WGS84) and spatial summaries aggregated to U.S. Geological Survey Watershed Boundary Dataset (WBD) hydrologic units at the HU8 and HU10 levels using the gdptools Python package. All available ensemble members were included without weighting. This release supports ecological, hydrologic, agricultural, and climate-impact assessments requiring consistent, high-resolution, multi-model bioclimatic indicators for historical and projected future conditions. The 27 included CMIP6 GCMs are: ACCESS-CM2, ACCESS-ESM1-5, AWI-CM-1-1-MR, BCC-CSM2-MR, CESM2-LENS, CNRM-CM6-1, CNRM-CM6-1-HR, CNRM-ESM2-1, CanESM5, EC-Earth3, EC-Earth3-Veg, FGOALS-g3, GFDL-CM4, GFDL-ESM4, HadGEM3-GC31-LL, HadGEM3-GC31-MM, INM-CM4-8, INM-CM5-0, IPSL-CM6A-LR, KACE-1-0-G, MIROC6, MPI-ESM1-2-HR, MPI-ESM1-2-LR, MRI-ESM2-0, NorESM2-LM, NorESM2-MM, TaiESM1
