Lineage | A system was developed for the rearing of marine fish eggs, larvae, and juveniles under controlled temperatures and CO2 levels. Walleye pollock were captured at age-0 from nearshore waters of Puget Sound at Port Townsend, Washington, and shipped to the Alaska Fisheries Science Center laboratory in Newport, Oregon, where they were used in experiments exposing early life stages (yearling and subyearling) to projected ocean acidification. In one experiment, yearling walleye pollock were reared for 6 wk to evaluate short-term responses in growth and condition. In a second experiment, sub-yearling walleye pollock were reared under elevated CO2 conditions for 28 wk to describe the cumulative effects of prolonged exposure to elevated CO2 levels. The second experiment included seasonally-reflective warm and cold phases and evaluated the possibility that growth rates are maintained in the face of elevated metabolic costs through compensatory feeding. |
