    North Pacific Groundfish observers collect real-time fisheries dependent data. This data is used to manage groundfish fisheries in domestic Alaskan waters. Fisheries dependent data that is collected by observers is in its rawest form. This data needs to be transformed so that end users of the data can use it for their specific needs. The purpose of the observer interface (OBSINT) is to take observer raw data and turn it into useable data products for different users of the data.

    Lineage The North Pacific Groundfish Observer Program was implemented in early 1990. Under this program, NMFS provides the operational oversight of the program, certification training, definition of observer sampling duties and methods, debriefing of observers, and management of the data. Although the vessel and plant owners pay for the cost of the observers, the costs associated with managing the program are covered by the Federal Government. This data set supersedes the Domestic data model.
