Acer saccharinum ring-width data from the Indian Slough area of the Upper Mississippi River floodplain, 1906–2018
Silver maple (Acer saccharinum L.) is a fast-growing, flood-tolerant species common in bottomland forests of eastern North America. Tree-ring research on silver maple is limited due to the species’ relatively short lifespan and reputation for indistinct rings. Here, we present a dataset of silver maple ring widths in support of a study detailed in the manuscript titled "Meticulous crossdating for silver maple chronology development in the Upper Mississippi River floodplain" (Trumper et al. in review). The dataset consists of annual ring widths from 35 increment cores collected from Indian Slough, one of twelve floodplain sites in the Upper Mississippi River where we developed new tree-ring data. Increment core specimens were dried, mounted, and sanded using standard methods in dendrochronology. Annual ring widths were measured and crossdated from high-resolution images of cores using Dendro Elevator (dendro.elevator.umn.edu).
