A database of peak streamflows derived from interpretations of indirect measurements for a crest-stage gage network in central and western Texas, October 2006 through September 2025 (ver. 2.0, July 2026)
The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), in cooperation with the Texas Department of Transportation, collected annual and approximately quarterly peak streamflow data at gaging stations in small- to medium-sized (sub square mile to about a few hundred square miles) natural watersheds in central and western Texas. The peak streamflow data were primarily collected at crest-stage gage (CSG) stations. CSGs record peak gage height (elevation of water surface above a local vertical datum) at the stations during storm events. Established indirect methods of peak streamflow estimation, such as culvert-flow, slope-area, and flow-over-road methods, were used in conjunction with peak gage height data to create the database of peak streamflows described herein. Peak streamflow data acquired during water years 2006–25 at the CSG network in central and western Texas were at some of the same locations where peak streamflow data were collected during water years 1994–97 and 2005 (as indicated in the periods of operation attributes in the "CSG_STATION_LIST.csv" file). The water year is defined as the period from October 1 through September 30, designated by the calendar year in which it ends. A database of 1,671 peak streamflow records for which 969 peaks are determined to be the annual peak for the corresponding water year is documented through water year 2025 for 52 CSG stations. Because of the complex nature and vagaries of field-data collection along with uncertainties in minimum-computable streamflow for any particular station and circumstances in time, many of the reported peak streamflows are listed as either inequalities (less than or greater than a streamflow threshold) or intervals (streamflow within lower and upper bounds). These inequalities still contain information on streamflow that can be used in certain statistical methods. The database reported represents the final peak streamflow record of the approximately 20-year CSG network.
