Additionally, over the course of the acoustic survey, the Center for Coastal Studies performed 21 aerial surveys over CCB, in which all observed right whales were photographed and individually identified. As the aerial surveys provided a conservative measure of right whale abundance in CCB, this dataset enables the evaluation of acoustic abundance estimates. Aerial survey data was collected under NOAA federal permit #19315-01. For more detail on the acoustic and aerial survey protocols, please reference the attached manuscript [Garcia & Tolkova et al, 2025]. The primary aim of this dataset was to monitor and estimate abundance of North Atlantic right whales during their spring migration through Cape Cod Bay, MA, a critical foraging site. For assessing the detector's performance, the detections were compared against expert annotations over a 20-day subset from this study's acoustic survey. An evaluation of performance suggested an optimal confidence threshold of 0.75, corresponding to a precision of 0.857, a recall of 0.896, and an average of 4.8 false positives per hour (for further detail, please see [Garcia & Tolkova et al, 2025] (Section 2.2.1 & Supplementary Materials).
