The 133-foot ship was outfitted as a muli-purpose platform with both wet and dry laboratory spaces, equipped with flowing fresh water, microcomputer, CTD, Sidescan sonar and hydrographic data acquisition systems. Operating out of Charleston, South Carolina, the Ferrel participated in multiple NOAA expeditions to investigate the US National Marine Sanctuaries. Commissioned in June 1968, the Ferrel had an endurance of nine days at sea and a range of 1,200 nautical miles with a cruising speed of 10 knots. The Ferrel carried a complement of three officers, eight crew members, and up to eight scientists. To conduct over-the-side operations, the various instruments used in the Ferrel's work were prepared and deployed through the combination of a large open fantail, an aft-mounted crane, a trawl winch, and a moveable A-frame, as well as a davit arm and oceanographic winch located midships. SCUBA diving operations was a primary activity launched from the Ferrel. NOAA Ship Ferrel was decommissioned on November 21, 2002, and is no longer in service. DeepWorker 2000 (600m Depth-Rated) Human Occupied Vehicle (HOV) 2018-05 creation DeepWorker 2000 600m DeepWorker 2000, or "DW", is a 600m (2,000ft) rated ocean exploration human occupied vehicle (HOV) built by Nuytco Research. Operating from multiple platforms, including NOAA Ships Gordon Gunter and R/V McArthur, DW is a completely self-contained, lightweight, directly operated submersible. A 30-in-wide acrylic dome serves as the entry hatch and provides the single pilot with a fantastic 250-270-degree field of vision. DW's two horizontal and two angled vertical thrusters, controlled by foot pedals, allow for extreme maneuverability at a speed of 3 knots in any direction. Its communications systems include VHF multi-channel radio for surface communications, and an acoustic through-water telephone for subsurface communications. Additional equipment includes sonar, HD cameras, a manipulator arm, tracking beacon, a precision laser measuring system, scanning sonar, and scientific sampling equipment. All equipment from onboard computers to air supply tanks have been miniaturized, allowing explorers to go deeper, and spend more time below the surface than they can with traditional scuba equipment, greatly enhancing exploration and research opportunities.
