The principal concept of a Rich Inventory is to calculate the data Quality Assurance (QA) descriptive statistics for selected parameters in each Level-2 data file and publish the pre-generated images and NetCDF-format data to the public. The QA descriptive statistics include valid observation number, observation number over 3-sigma edited, minimum, maximum, mean, and standard deviation. The parameters include sea surface height anomaly, significant wave height, altimeter, and radiometer wind speed, radiometer water vapor content, and radiometer wet tropospheric correction from Jason-3 Level-2 Final Geophysical Data Record (GDR) and Interim Geophysical Data Record (IGDR) products. Objective: 1) Enable NCEI data archive managers to view the live Jason satellites level-2 data ingest, and to see if the descriptive data quality statistics in the selected parameters fall out of acceptable ranges. 2) Enable public users to access the data quality information in near real time through data servers or pre-generated images, and make it available as part of a data discovery system. 3) Data anomalies are monitored and reported to interested parties (data archivist, producers and users) through a notification system. Scheduled to launch in 2015, the mission will extend the time series of ocean surface topography measurements (the hills and valleys of the ocean surface) begun by the TOPEX/Poseidon satellite mission in 1992 and continuing through the currently operating Jason-1 (launched in 2001) and OSTM/Jason-2 (launched in 2008) missions. These measurements provide scientists with critical information about circulation patterns in the ocean and about both global and regional changes in sea level and the climate implications of a warming world. The primary instrument on Jason-3 is a radar altimeter. The altimeter will measure sea-level variations over the global ocean with very high accuracy (as 1.3 inches or 3.3 centimeters, with a goal of achieving 1 inch or 2.5 centimeters). Continual, long-term, reliable data of changes in ocean surface topography will be generated and will be used by scientists and operational agencies (NOAA, European weather agencies, marine operators, etc.) for scientific research and operational oceanography for the benefit of society.
