Each petroleum system\nis defined as a mappable entity encompassing genetically\nrelated petroleum that occurs in seeps, shows and accumulations\n(discovered or undiscovered) that have been generated by a pod,\nor by closely related pods, of mature source rock, together with\nthe essental mappable geologic elements (source, reservoir, seal\nand overburden rocks) that control fundamental processes of\ngeneration, migration, entrapment and preservation of petroleum.\nTotal petroleum systems are described by U.S. Geological Survey\nscientists on the basis of exploration and production histories,\nand extensive literature searches. Total petroleum systems are\nidentified with a numeric code derived from the numeric code\nof the World Geologic Provinces as defined by the\nU.S. Geological Survey World Energy Project. Most total\npetroleum systems are contained within a single geologic\nprovince, but there are numerous cases where systems\nspan more than one province.
