The elevation of the top of the potentiometric\nsurface of the Madison aquifer was subtracted from the top of the\nMadison  Limestone, and the boundary of the unconfined zone\nwas created where the calculation results equalled zero.\nThe saturated thickness of the aquifer in the unconfined zone\nwas determined by subtracting the elevation of the top of the\nDeadwood Formation from the potentiometric surface elevation of\nthe Madison aquifer. The potentiometric surface and the tops of\nthe formations where determined from water levels and geologic\nlogs from selected wells drilled as of 1998.
