				<gco:CharacterString>The Intercity Bus Atlas - Routes dataset uses source data from April 08, 2025 and was created on April 08, 2025 from the Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS) and is part of the U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT)/Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS) National Transportation Atlas Database (NTAD). The Intercity Bus Atlas (ICBA) initiative collects, compiles, maps, publishes, and archives scheduled intercity bus service data provided by North American bus service providers. ICBA data--collected as periodic historic snapshots of available intercity bus services--is intended for federal, state, local, and tribal transportation decision makers, metropolitan planning organizations, transportation-related associations, private sector actors (including the freight community), and the public to better understand the density, frequency, accessibility, and reachability provided by the intercity bus industry's services. The stop, route, and schedule data provided by the ICBA reveal the local, interregional, and international connectivity, service densities, frequencies, and travel patterns enabled by the intercity bus component of the United States' myriad transportation facilities and services as well as how these services co-exist with other modes of passenger travel. The underlying source data of the ICBA are supplied by participating North American bus service providers, who publish their schedule information compliant the General Transit Feed Specification (GTFS). This GTFS standard allows intercity bus providers to publish operational information on their stops, routes, trips, schedules, fares, and transfers in a way that is maximally interoperable with applications that consume, process, and visualize the data for riders and others interested in learning more about their services. The ICBA, however, relies only on data provided via GTFS' schedule component; while there is a second GTFS component for real-time bus location data, it is not currently utilized or required for the ICBA. In turn, the Bureau of Transportations Statistics collects GTFS schedule data from provider websites and compiles them into a single geospatially enabled database. As of December 2023, this database contains two feature layers, each representing a different component of providers networks: stops and routes. The ICBA Routes dataset shows the alignment of each intercity bus route (i.e., a group of trips displayed to riders as a single service) along the national road network; it combines information from the GTFS "routes.txt", "trips.txt", and "shapes.txt" files. 						<gco:CharacterString>Entity and Attribute Overview: The Intercity Bus Atlas (ICBA) initiative collects, compiles, maps, publishes, and archives scheduled intercity bus service data provided by North American bus service providers. ICBA data--collected as periodic historic snapshots of available intercity bus services--is intended for federal, state, local, and tribal transportation decision makers, metropolitan planning organizations, transportation-related associations, private sector actors (including the freight community), and the public to better understand the density, frequency, accessibility, and reachability provided by the intercity bus industry's services. The stop, route, and schedule data provided by the ICBA reveal the local, interregional, and international connectivity, service densities, frequencies, and travel patterns enabled by the intercity bus component of the United States' myriad transportation facilities and services as well as how these services co-exist with other modes of passenger travel. The underlying source data of the ICBA are supplied by participating North American bus service providers, who publish their schedule information compliant the General Transit Feed Specification (GTFS). This GTFS standard allows intercity bus providers to publish operational information on their stops, routes, trips, schedules, fares, and transfers in a way that is maximally interoperable with applications that consume, process, and visualize the data for riders and others interested in learning more about their services. The ICBA, however, relies only on data provided via GTFS' schedule component; while there is a second GTFS component for real-time bus location data, it is not currently utilized or required for the ICBA. In turn, the Bureau of Transportations Statistics collects GTFS schedule data from provider websites and compiles them into a single geospatially enabled database. As of December 2023, this database contains two feature layers, each representing a different component of providers networks: stops and routes. At its broadest, the agreement contained in this form permits BTS to obtain the "scheduled service data" (i.e., records used to plan the transport of passengers, or freight, over routes pursuant to published schedules) for each intercity bus provider from "authoritative sources" (e.g., the intercity bus service providers themselves or organizations given explicit permission to publish scheduled service data on behalf of the intercity bus provider). The agreement additionally compels BTS to attribute the data to the provider, prohibits commercial use of the data, and disallows substantive material alterations to the data. The providers' data, meanwhile, are granted to BTS with a license to use such data under the terms and provisions of the Creative Commons Attribution – Non-commercial 4.0 International (CC-BY-NC 4.0) license; details on the CC-BY-NC 4.0 are available at: https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc/4.0/legalcode.As part of this agreement, BTS is allowed to collect, compile, publish, and archive the providers' GTFS data at least once a year but no more than four time a year. Operationally, BTS completes this task by collecting GTFS schedule data from provider websites and compiling them into a single geospatially enabled database; this process is semi-automated and performed on a regular schedule over the course of the calendar year, often to coincide with routine updates to other layers in the BTS National Transportation Atlas Database. As part of this process, all non-bus routes and stops are removed, and all agency information is appended to the stop and routes files. A provider with new GTFS data can request that BTS make an update outside of these regular collection dates if that request is made to BTS in writing (preferably via e-mail). Nevertheless, BTS may delay these ad-hoc updates if (1) they comprise less than 10% of the ICBA records and/or (2) the requests are received and processed less than 45 days before the next scheduled collection date. Once all data are received, whether for a scheduled or ad-hoc update, they are validated and published on the NTAD. Public data users are notified of this update in a subsequent press release.The terms and conditions applied to the providers' GTFS data become effective on the date the Intercity Bus Atlas Registration data is submitted to BTS by the submitter. The agreement then remains effective for one calendar year with automatic one-year renewals thereafter unless terminated in accordance with the stipulated termination procedures. A submitter may terminate their affiliation with and authorization of BTS to collect data related to the operations of their intercity bus services at any point in time provided such termination is in writing. An e-mail termination is acceptable and is preferred; such notice should be sent to NICBA@dot.gov. Please allow BTS thirty (30) calendar days to terminate any data collection.
