Using a hamster model of\n\t\t\t\tbacterial peritonitis, we investigated whether serum ProCT levels are elevated\n\t\t\t\tand correlate with mortality and hypocalcemia.\n        \n        \n          Results:\n          Incremental increases in doses of bacteria resulted in\n\t\t\t\tproportional increases in 72h mortality rates (0, 20, 70, and 100%) as well as\n\t\t\t\tincreases in serum total immunoreactive calcitonin (iCT) levels at 12 h (250,\n\t\t\t\t380, 1960, and 4020 pg/ml, respectively, vs control levels of 21 pg/ml).\n\t\t\t\tGel filtration studies revealed that ProCT was the predominant (> 90%)\n\t\t\t\tmolecular form of serum iCT secreted.
