Associated data include spatial lakebed mapping priorities, remotely sensed lakebed imagery (LiDAR bathymetry, multibeam bathymetry, backscatter, and sidescan sonar), and underwater photos and videos. The dataset includes original data collections, data assessments, and modeled data. Original data collection spans the years 2017 to 2018, and assessments and modeled data were undertaken from 2017 to 2020. This dataset was the product of a partnership among the National Centers for Coastal Ocean Science, the Office of National Marine Sanctuaries, and the Great Lakes Environmental Research Laboratory. This dataset was prepared to support management by the Office of National Marine Sanctuaries, Wisconsin resource management agencies, as well as other managers, researchers and stakeholders. This dataset was compiled to inventory and record an assessment of the lakebed within the proposed Wisconsin-Lake Michigan National Marine Sanctuary. In 2015, the National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration announced its intent to designate a new national marine sanctuary off the coast of Wisconsin in Lake Michigan. The proposed 1,075-square-mile sanctuary encompasses a nationally-significant collection of shipwrecks, including 37 known shipwrecks and as many as 80 shipwrecks yet to be discovered, and was nominated by the state of Wisconsin with broad community and bipartisan support. The nomination focused on conserving maritime heritage resources, fostering partnerships with education and research partners, and increasing opportunities for tourism and economic development. This dataset provides spatial information and assessments needed by coastal managers to protect and preserve maritime heritage, provide the foundation for monitoring changes to heritage resources over time, and provide baseline information for management and planning of lake resources and services. The intended users are managers and coordinators from the Office of National Marine Sanctuary, but the information will also support coastal zone management by the state of Wisconsin, historical conservation by the Wisconsin Historical Society, and other managers, researchers and stakeholders interested in Lake Michigan and the broader Great Lakes ecosystem.
