It is based on species habitat data and status from the IUCN Red List (http://www.iucnredlist.org/technical-documents/spatial-data). The species ranges published by IUCN were allocated to watersheds using Geographic Information Systems tools. Our native species database contains 1510 species, including fish, mollusks, amphibians, turtles, and crustaceans (shrimp and crayfish). IUCN assigns conservation status to species based on historical information, range estimates, and known population trends. The rarity index was calculated using the "rarity" package for the open source statistical software R. Each species was assigned a rarity weight based on its range across the US; species with range sizes below the lowest quartile are considered rare, while the rest are considered common. Each watershed received a rarity score that is the average of the rarity weights of all species present in that watershed. Rarity is based on the size of a species range, so watersheds containing many species with very small ranges will have high rarity measures, whereas those containing mostly species that are very widespread across the US will have low rarity measures. The vulnerability index is the mean of the normalized count of threatened and endangered species and the normalized rarity index.
