In cooperation with the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Lower Mississippi-Gulf (LMG) Water Science Center (WSC) has been collecting, compiling, and publishing water-withdrawal and water-use information on a 5-year basis since 1960. The 5-year reports are available online at the Louisiana Water Use project page.\nThis data release contains water withdrawn in 2020 tabulated by parish, industrial group, water-use category, source type, and designated source name. In 2020, approximately 8,700 million gallons per day (Mgal/d) of water was withdrawn from groundwater and surface-water sources in Louisiana. Total groundwater withdrawals were about 1,900 Mgal/d and total surface-water withdrawals were about 6,800 Mgal/d. Total water withdrawals, in Mgal/d, in 2020 for the various categories of use were as follows: public supply \u2014 720, industry \u2014 2,100, power generation \u2014 4,100, rural domestic \u2014 39, livestock \u2014 7.0, rice irrigation \u2014 930, general irrigation \u2014 250, and   aquaculture \u2014 590. About 51 percent (approximately 960 Mgal/d) of all groundwater withdrawn was from the Chicot aquifer system and 24 percent (approximately 450 Mgal/d) was withdrawn from the Mississippi River alluvial aquifer. About 72 percent (4,900 Mgal/d) of all surface water withdrawn was from the Mississippi River mainstem.", "distribution": [{"@type": "dcat:Distribution", "accessURL": "https://doi.org/10.5066/P13G8OMQ", "description": "Landing page for access to the data", "format": "XML", "mediaType": "application/http", "title": "Digital Data"}, {"@type": "dcat:Distribution", "description": "The metadata original format", "downloadURL": "https://data.usgs.gov/datacatalog/metadata/USGS.66957c22d34eef7f311695f7.xml", "format": "XML", "mediaType": "text/xml", "title": "Original Metadata"}], "identifier": "http://datainventory.doi.gov/id/dataset/USGS_66957c22d34eef7f311695f7", "keyword": ["Standard Industrial Classification", "USGS:66957c22d34eef7f311695f7", "aquaculture", "crop irrigation", "groundwater", "industry", "livestock", "power generation", "public supply", "rice irrigation", "rural domestic", "surface water", "water use"], "modified": "2026-05-07T00:00:00Z", "publisher": {"@type": "org:Organization", "name": "U.S. Geological Survey"}, "spatial": "-94.2352, 28.7191, -88.6981, 33.2751", "theme": ["geospatial"], "title": "Water withdrawals in Louisiana, 2020"}
