The primary goal of this project is to survey and map the nearshore waters of the Chukchi coast between Wainwright and the western terminus of the Seahorse Islands, approximately 60 nautical miles southwest of Barrow, in search of submerged remnants of the nearly fifty whaling ships abandoned and lost there in 1871 and 1876. The vessel is 50' (16.4 meters) in length, has a beam of 16' (5.2 meters), and a draft 4' (1.3 meters). The vessel has twin Cummins 430hp diesel engines and cruises at 16 knots. The US Coast Guard has approved this vessel as an "Oceanographic Research Vessel" according to Title 46 United States Code 2101 (18), subpart 3.05-3.
