To investigate potential suitability of substrates for lake sturgeon spawning habitat, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), in cooperation with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) St. Paul District, collected sidescan sonar imagery of the Mississippi River bed below Lock and Dam No. 2, near Hastings, Minnesota. Data were collected on August 21, 2025 for a study area covering approximately 33 hectares. Raw sidescan data were processed into georeferenced images using the open\u2010source software PING\u2010Mapper (Bodine et al., 2022, 2024).  PING-Mapper was also used to perform an automated substrate classification from the sidescan data, identifying the following classes: fines flat, fines ripple, cobble/boulder, hard bottom, and wood. Additionally, sonar returns were processed to produce a dataset of water depths at each ping location.\nAny use of trade, firm, or product names is for descriptive purposes only and does not imply endorsement by the U.S. Government.", "distribution": [{"@type": "dcat:Distribution", "accessURL": "https://doi.org/10.5066/P1HDQK7B", "description": "Landing page for access to the data", "format": "XML", "mediaType": "application/http", "title": "Digital Data"}, {"@type": "dcat:Distribution", "description": "The metadata original format", "downloadURL": "https://data.usgs.gov/datacatalog/metadata/USGS.697780a8d4be02609dd03d59.xml", "format": "XML", "mediaType": "text/xml", "title": "Original Metadata"}], "identifier": "http://datainventory.doi.gov/id/dataset/USGS_697780a8d4be02609dd03d59", "keyword": ["Dakota County", "Hastings", "Minnesota", "Mississippi Headwaters", "Mississippi River", "USGS:697780a8d4be02609dd03d59", "United States", "Washington County", "environment", "geoscientificInformation", "geospatial analysis", "geospatial datasets", "gravel deposits", "hydrographic datasets", "image analysis", "inlandWaters", "remote sensing", "sand deposits", "sidescan sonar", "sonar methods", "structure", "transportation", "unconsolidated deposits"], "modified": "2026-05-29T00:00:00Z", "publisher": {"@type": "org:Organization", "name": "U.S. Geological Survey"}, "spatial": "-92.866437, 44.750921, -92.858735, 44.760700", "theme": ["geospatial"], "title": "Sidescan sonar images and substrate classification maps for the Mississippi River below Lock and Dam No. 2 in Minnesota, August 2025"}
