Gas bubbling from lakes in the Fairbanks area is usually rich in methane, a potent greenhouse gas that is difficult to quantify. A new remote sensing method was used for detecting potential gas seepage, defined as areas of suspected perennial ebullition, by using a previously ground-truthed seep that appeared as a high-backscatter perennial feature in winter L-band Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) data from 2006-2011. Based on threshold values determined by the sigma-naught backscatter of this training seep, 1,690 areas of potential seepage were detected in 459 lakes out of 658 lakes analyzed. Results were validated through a different ground-truthed seep. The data are provided in shapefile format.", "distribution": [{"@type": "dcat:Distribution", "conformsTo": "http://www.isotc211.org/2005/gmi", "description": "The metadata's original source.", "downloadURL": "https://cmr.earthdata.nasa.gov/search/concepts/C3436677597-ORNL_CLOUD.iso19115", "format": "ISO", "mediaType": "text/xml", "title": "Original Metadata"}, {"@type": "dcat:Distribution", "downloadURL": "https://above.nasa.gov", "format": "BIN", "mediaType": "application/octet-stream"}, {"@type": "dcat:Distribution", "downloadURL": "https://daac.ornl.gov/ABOVE/guides/Gas_Seeps_Lakes_Fairbanks_SAR_Fig1.jpg", "format": "JPEG", "mediaType": "image/jpeg"}, {"@type": "dcat:Distribution", "downloadURL": "https://data.ornldaac.earthdata.nasa.gov/protected/bundle/Gas_Seeps_Lakes_Fairbanks_SAR_2394.zip", "format": "ZIP", "mediaType": "application/zip"}, {"@type": "dcat:Distribution", "downloadURL": "https://data.ornldaac.earthdata.nasa.gov/public/above/Gas_Seeps_Lakes_Fairbanks_SAR/comp/Gas_Seeps_Lakes_Fairbanks_SAR.pdf", "format": "PDF", "mediaType": "application/pdf"}, {"@type": "dcat:Distribution", "downloadURL": "https://doi.org/10.3334/ORNLDAAC/2394", "format": "HTML", "mediaType": "text/html"}, {"@type": "dcat:Distribution", "downloadURL": "https://search.earthdata.nasa.gov/search/granules?p=C3436677597-ORNL_CLOUD", "format": "BIN", "mediaType": "application/octet-stream"}], "identifier": "10.3334/ORNLDAAC/2394", "keyword": ["earth-science-climate-feedbacks-climate-indicators-cryospheric-feedbacks", "earth-science-ecosystems-biosphere-freshwater-ecosystems", "earth-science-frozen-ground-cryosphere-permafrost", "earth-science-paleoclimate-indicators-climate-indicators-permafrost-methane-release", "earth-science-snow-ice-cryosphere-lake-ice", "earth-science-water-quality-water-chemistry-terrestrial-hydrosphere-gases"], "license": "https://www.usa.gov/government-works", "modified": "2026-08-11", "programCode": ["026:000"], "publisher": {"@type": "org:Organization", "name": "ORNL_DAAC"}, "spatial": "[\"CARTESIAN\", [{\"WestBoundingCoordinate\": -148.287, \"NorthBoundingCoordinate\": 65.1787, \"EastBoundingCoordinate\": -146.87, \"SouthBoundingCoordinate\": 64.3313}]]", "temporal": "2006-12-04/2011-03-17", "theme": ["Earth Science"], "title": "Potential Areas of Gas Seepage Detected by SAR in Lakes near Fairbanks, Alaska"}
