In this effort, the U.S. Geological Survey and Tall Timber Research Station's Southeast FireMap (SEFM) Landsat Burned Area Product (LBA) was used to identify burned area across southeastern United States over a 32-year period (1994-2025). SEFM products provide a modified version of the Landsat Burned Area products for continental United States to improve burned area mapping within the southeastern region. The SEFM Landsat product was consolidated into a suite of annual burned area products, which in-turn were used to calculate a series of contemporary fire history metrics (30 m resolution). Fire history metrics included: (1) fire frequency (FRQ), (2) time since last burn (TSLB) and (3) year of last burn (YLB), (4) longest fire-free interval (LFFI), and (5) average fire interval length (FIL). The FRQ, TSLB and YLB metrics are useful across a wide range of fire regimes, and can be used to inform risk of wildfire, answer fire-management questions, or support fire model parameterization. The FIL and LFFI, alternatively, provide data on the distribution of fire events across the period of record and can help guide land management in regions with frequent fire, such as the Southeast.", "distribution": [{"@type": "dcat:Distribution", "accessURL": "https://doi.org/10.5066/P1PVDTVK", "description": "Landing page for access to the data", "format": "XML", "mediaType": "application/http", "title": "Digital Data"}, {"@type": "dcat:Distribution", "description": "The metadata original format", "downloadURL": "https://data.usgs.gov/datacatalog/metadata/USGS.686e99edd4be020e5c0a67f8.xml", "format": "XML", "mediaType": "text/xml", "title": "Original Metadata"}], "identifier": "http://datainventory.doi.gov/id/dataset/USGS_686e99edd4be020e5c0a67f8", "keyword": ["Alabama", "Arkansas", "Florida", "Georgia", "Kentucky", "Landsat", "Louisiana", "Mississippi", "North Carolina", "Oklahoma", "South Carolina", "Southeast", "Southeast FireMap", "Tennessee", "Texas", "USGS:686e99edd4be020e5c0a67f8", "United States", "Virginia", "burned area", "fire frequency", "fire regime", "fire return interval", "historic fire", "prescribed fire", "southeast United States", "wildfire", "wildland fire"], "modified": "2026-07-20T00:00:00Z", "publisher": {"@type": "org:Organization", "name": "U.S. Geological Survey"}, "spatial": "-96.181118, 22.770135, -77.413233, 38.506366", "theme": ["geospatial"], "title": "Southeast FireMap Landsat Fire History Metrics (1994-2025)"}
