Perfluorocarbon emulsions are efficacious in animal\t\t\t experiments, and in humans they are well tolerated and at least as successful\t\t\t to reverse physiologic transfusion triggers than autologous blood.\t\t\t Perfluorocarbon emulsions may be used in the future in the concept of augmented\t\t\t acute normovolaemic haemodilution. In this concept relatively low preoperative\t\t\t haemoglobin levels are targeted during preoperative normovolaemic haemodilution\t\t\t and a perfluorocarbon emulsion is given to augment oxygen delivery during\t\t\t surgery when low endogenous haemoglobin levels are expected. The autologous\t\t\t blood is subsequently retransfused in the postoperative period when the\t\t\t patient's oxygenation is provided primarily by the endogenous\t\t\t haemoglobin. Additional uses of perfluorocarbon emulsions will include\t\t\t treatments of diseases with compromised tissue oxygenation such as cerebral or\t\t\t myocardial ischaemia, air embolism and emergency or trauma surgery as long as\t\t\t no allogeneic blood is available.", "distribution": [{"@type": "dcat:Distribution", "description": "Visit the original government dataset for complete information, documentation, and data access.", "downloadURL": "https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC137239/", "mediaType": "text/html", "title": "Official Government Data Source"}], "identifier": "https://healthdata.gov/api/views/8qkf-9c93", "issued": "2025-07-14", "keyword": ["blood-substitutes", "blood-transfusion", "nih", "oxygen-carriers", "perfluorocarbon-emulsions"], "landingPage": "https://healthdata.gov/d/8qkf-9c93", "modified": "2025-09-06", "programCode": ["009:037"], "publisher": {"@type": "org:Organization", "name": "National Institutes of Health"}, "theme": ["NIH"], "title": "Blood substitutes Artificial oxygen carriers: perfluorocarbon\t\t  emulsions"}
