The resolution with which we can measure energy of the Rydberg\nstate is set by the spectral linewidth of the EIT feature. While selection criteria for the two-photon\nresonance can narrow the linewidth to the order of the Rydberg state decay rate for a single atom,\nthe Doppler shift from thermal velocity of the atoms broadens the linewidth of the ensemble to of\norder the decay rate of the intermediate state. Here, we derive an analytic expression for the Doppler\nresidual lineshape in the low-power limit, and corroborate the results with experiment. For Rb, we\nfind the full-width at half-maximum linewidth limit to be 1.84 MHz when scanning the coupling laser\nand measure an experimental linewidth of 2.04 MHz. These linewidths are significantly narrower\nthan previous theoretical estimates as well as previously reported measured linewidths. With this\nwe demonstrate the most precise energy resolution of a Rydberg state in thermal vapor using two\nphotons to date. We then map out misalignment and power broadening near this limit and discuss\nbroadening mechanisms.", "distribution": [{"downloadURL": "https://data.nist.gov/od/ds/mds2-4115/4115_README.txt", "mediaType": "text/plain", "title": "README"}, {"downloadURL": "https://data.nist.gov/od/ds/mds2-4115/Fig2.csv", "mediaType": "text/csv", "title": "Fig2"}, {"downloadURL": "https://data.nist.gov/od/ds/mds2-4115/Fig3.csv", "mediaType": "text/csv", "title": "Fig3"}, {"downloadURL": "https://data.nist.gov/od/ds/mds2-4115/Fig4.csv", "mediaType": "text/csv", "title": "Fig4"}, {"downloadURL": "https://data.nist.gov/od/ds/mds2-4115/Fig5.csv", "mediaType": "text/csv", "title": "Fig5"}], "identifier": "ark:/88434/mds2-4115", "issued": "2026-05-07", "keyword": ["Rydberg atoms", "atomic physics", "electric field", "fields strength", "receivers", "volts/meter"], "landingPage": "https://data.nist.gov/od/id/mds2-4115", "language": ["en"], "license": "https://www.nist.gov/open/license", "modified": "2026-02-24 00:00:00", "programCode": ["006:045"], "publisher": {"@type": "org:Organization", "name": "National Institute of Standards and Technology"}, "theme": ["Physics:Atomic, molecular, and quantum"], "title": "Data associated with:  \"Fundamental linewidth limit of electromagnetically induced transparency in a\nthermal Rydberg ladder\""}
