The use of free radical scavengers can offer significant\n\t\t\t\tprotection against OFR-induced liver injury. We hypothesize that a new potent\n\t\t\t\tOFR scavenger, polyethylene glycol-superoxide dismutase (PEG-SOD), can inhibit\n\t\t\t\tOFR-mediated lipid peroxidation in hepatic ischemia/reperfusion injury.\n        \n        \n          Methods:\n          Twelve male Sprague-Dawley rats (300-350 g) were subjected to\n\t\t\t\tocclusion of the left and middle hepatic arteries and portal veins for 90 min,\n\t\t\t\tfollowed by 120 min reperfusion. PEG-SOD (5000 units/kg) was given intravenously\n\t\t\t\tbefore vascular occlusion and again immediately upon reperfusion to six rats.\n\t\t\t\tNormal saline was given to the remaining six rats to be used as a control\n\t\t\t\tgroup. The right hepatic lobe (used as internal control) and left hepatic lobe\n\t\t\t\twere harvested separately and tissue malondialdehyde was measured.\n        \n        \n          Results:\n          A marked increase in lipid peroxide was found in the normal saline\n\t\t\t\tgroup after 2 h reperfusion. Treatment with PEG-SOD prevented the rise in tissue\n\t\t\t\tmalondialdehyde. The mean difference in the malondialdehyde between the left\n\t\t\t\tand right hepatic lobes were 13.20 \u00b1 6.35 and 1.70 \u00b1 3.65 nmol/g in the\n\t\t\t\tnormal saline (control) and PEG-SOD groups, respectively.
