Client intervention programs in four cities provided\r\nopportunities for gathering information from men arrested for trying\r\nto hire street prostitutes. For the study, a detailed anonymous\r\nquestionnaire was administered to men before the beginning of every\r\nclient intervention workshop in San Francisco, California, and\r\nPortland, Oregon. The questionnaire was also administered at a small\r\nprogram in Santa Clara, California, which was modeled after the San\r\nFrancisco program. During the course of the study, the Portland\r\nprogram ceased operations and a new program began in Las Vegas, which\r\nbecame a significant source of data. Men were asked about their sexual\r\nbehavior, including the number and type of partners, frequency of sex,\r\ninterest in pornography, age and circumstances of first sexual\r\nencounter with a prostitute, sexual acts performed with prostitutes,\r\nand condom use with prostitutes. Clients were also asked about their\r\nattitudes toward premarital sex, homosexual sex, extramarital sex, and\r\nsex between adults and children. Other questions probed men's views\r\nabout prostitutes, the legality of prostitution, and violence against\r\nwomen.
