At these locations, electronically documented intact river channel features of the Pleistocene Suwannee River are now filled with multiple layers of sediment. These sites are covered by 40 to 130 feet of ocean water and are located 50 to 125 miles offshore of the modern Gulf Coast of Florida northwest of Tampa or southeast of Tallahassee. The three shallower sites have bedrock exposed on the seafloor that forms one side of the buried channel. The bedrock at each of these sites is low grade knappable toolstone that could have been used for tool making. The deepest site, Thor’s Elbow, is the intersection of the ancient Suwannee and another river where they expected to find more knappable bedrock buried under the modern surface. At each of these sites divers hoped to locate prehistoric human made artifacts, bones of Pleistocene animals, such as the mastodon, and perhaps datable organic material such as pieces of wood. Any such finds would indicate that the now inundated Pleistocene landscape of Florida in the Gulf of Mexico is still preserved, accessible to archaeologists, and contains prehistoric evidence of the use of this landscape by people and animals alive at the end of the last Ice Age. What is known about the past is derived from the direct evidence collected in the field and analysis in the lab. Whether looking for information on long term climate change, sea level rise, the extinction of the Pleistocene megafauna, or how people first arrived and lived in the New World, the amount of direct evidence found is very small. Much of what is known about these topics is based on models and informed speculation. Directly probing the sequence of sediments discussed above will generate new data that can be used to give a better understanding of the past, long term changes to the world, and how people and animals have adapted to the world in which they live. RV Weatherbird II Weatherbird II 2012-06-14 creation Weatherbird II The R/V Weatherbird II has been the flagship of the FIO fleet since February 2009 following its acquisition and renovation. The 115-foot, 194-ton vessel has since become one of the nation’s most storied research vessels after its repeated voyages to carry out scientific missions in the Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill catastrophe. The Weatherbird II is equipped with advanced laboratories, oceanographic devices and sensor technology designed to enable scientists and students to study and learn about various aspects of the ocean’s biological, chemical, geological and physical characteristics. Researchers use the vessel to support advanced studies on myriad of complex issues impacting global and coastal oceans, as well as life in the sea.
