These data span the big bend region of Florida’s gulf coast consisting of Gulf, Franklin, Wakulla, Jefferson, and Taylor counties. The data are in GIS raster format. These adjusted data are now suitable for modeling salt marsh evolution and flood inundation under sea-level rise (SLR) scenarios. Lidar data used in this adjustment were collected on March 01, 2018. The overall goal of this project was to produce a DEM that mitigated the lidar elevation bias associated with salt marsh habitats within the Apalachee Bay area of Florida. These adjusted data (in meters) are now suitable for fine-scale modeling within the salt marsh and coastal wetland habitats. The lidar DEM used as the basis for these data were provided by the Northwest Florida Water Management District and is now available for download from NOAA Digital Coast (https://coast.noaa.gov/digitalcoast/). Specifically, the lidar DEM used in this study was compiled from three DEM products (from West to East): 1) 2-meter resolution Lower Choctawhatchee lidar DEM collected between 9 April and 17 May 2017, 2) 1-meter resolution DEM for the Florida Panhandle collected between 31 March and 10 May 2018, and 3) in the far eastern end of the study area the older 5-meter resolution Florida Division of Emergency Management 2007 DEM was used due to the lack of more recent data in this area. These data were converted to NAVD88 and mosaicked together with priority to the more recent data (2018, 2017, 2007) and checked for discontinuities that would indicate errors in the DEM. *Elevation adjustment model*: DEM adjustments were focused on areas classified by the 30-meter resolution 2016 Coastal Change Analysis Project (C-CAP), as Estuarine Emergent Wetlands (C-CAP Class 18) and Palustrine Emergent Wetlands (C-CAP Class 15). Also, open water areas (C-CAP Class 21) were removed from the DEM. These coastal wetland or salt marsh regions were used to constrain the DEM bias mitigation adjustments. The process for adjusting the source lidar DEM elevations utilized machine learning to integrate in-situ topographic measurements with multispectral satellite imagery. The overall objective of the lidar DEM bias mitigation effort was to provide a topographically accurate marsh platform model for use in Hydro-MEM simulations of salt marsh evolution and migration in response to sea level rise. A Random Forest (RF) DEM adjustment model was developed and applied on a large scale without the need to collect vegetation characteristics in the field. Real Time Kinematic Global Navigation Satellite System (RTK-GNSS) field surveys were conducted (March 2018) to acquire true topographic elevations in a salt marsh along Florida’s northern Gulf of Mexico coast which were combined with Lidar-derived DEM elevations from Sentinel-2A MSI imagery to form the training and test data sets. Due to the small spot elevation sample (n=377) the RF model was trained using a leave-one-out protocol. The final RF model outperformed a linear regression model when predicting the lidar DEM errors and achieved a mean absolute error (MAE) = 0.54 m, mean absolute percentage error (MAPE) = 0.87%, and R2= 0.701. These predicted errors were used to mitigate the bias in the lidar DEM, improving its accuracy by 69.1% compared to the unadjusted DEM asNeeded Metadata are developed, maintained and distributed by NCEI.
